Help! I can’t find my UTR
As we approach the end of the year and get caught up in all the chaos of the festive season, it’s easy to lose sight of the fact the January 31st deadline for self-assessment is just around the corner.
HMRC has this neat tool for checking if you need to send a self assessment tax return, and there’s lots more information in our blog post “Do I have to submit a tax return as an umbrella worker?”
One thing you will need to submit a self-assessment tax return is a personal UTR (Unique Tax Reference) number. This 10-digit reference is what identifies you to HMRC and will be quoted on any correspondence you get from them related to your personal tax affairs.
If you haven’t got a UTR yet, or have lost yours, you need to act now or you risk missing the self-assessment deadline and incurring hefty penalties from HMRC.
What is a UTR and why is it important?
Your UTR is a personal 10-digit code issued by HMRC. It identifies you in all communications and dealings regarding your tax affairs, especially for self-assessment returns. If you’re self-employed, a CIS (Construction Industry Scheme) worker, or a limited company director, you’ll need your UTR to file your self-assessment tax return. Without it, you risk missing the deadline and facing fines from HMRC.
Lost your UTR? Here’s how to find it
If you’ve ever worked self-employed, under the CIS, or been a limited company director, HMRC will have already issued you a UTR. If you’ve misplaced it, here’s where to start your search:
- Check Previous Correspondence: HMRC includes your UTR on letters related to your tax, such as tax returns, notices to file, or payment reminders. If you have filed a tax return previously, look back at those records for your UTR.
- Your Personal Tax Account: Log into your HMRC online account, where your UTR will be displayed. This is usually the quickest way to retrieve it if you have online access.
- Call HMRC: If you can’t find your UTR in documents or online, call the HMRC helpline on 0300 200 3310. They’ll ask you some security questions, and once verified, they’ll send your UTR by post.
Important Note: HMRC will only send your UTR via secure post, so make sure to allow sufficient time, especially if you’re close to the self-assessment deadline. Delays due to Christmas post or bank holidays may occur, so acting early is crucial to avoid late filing penalties.
Registering for a UTR
If you’ve never registered for self-assessment, you’ll need to apply for a UTR. You can do this online through the HMRC website or by calling them. You’ll need your National Insurance number and details of your personal or business income. Once registered, HMRC will send your UTR through the post, which you’ll use for all future self-assessment submissions. You’ll get your UTR by post 15 days after you register. You can usually see your UTR sooner in your Personal Tax Account or the HMRC app.
