St. Valentine is also the patron saint of beekeepers and plague victims. (So if you were a bee-keeper who died of plague you’re definitely top of his friends list.)
It was common in the 1800s for doctors to recommend eating chocolate to calm their patients pining for lost love. We think they were on to something!
In some countries, mid-February marks the beginning of the mating season for our feathered friends. Gives a whole new meaning to pulling birds.
Teachers receive the most Valentine’s Day cards, followed by children, mothers, wives and pets. (My dog got 3 but he’s scared of commitment.)
In the Middle Ages, young men and women would draw names from a bowl to see who would be their Valentine. They would then wear this pinned to their sleeve. And that’s where the expression “to wear your heart on your sleeve” comes from.
73% of people who buy flowers on this day are men, while 27% are women. Just putting it out there.
In Finland, February 14th is not just for lovers. They call the holiday “Ystӓvӓnpӓivӓ” and it’s a celebration of friends. Pretty great, no?
